More Valuable Than a Diamond
“Every tooth in a man’s head is more valuable than a diamond.”
-Miguel de Cervantes, Don Quixote, 1605
When Cervantes wrote Don Quixote, there was no way to replace teeth that were lost to trauma or decay. We are fortunate to live here in Staten Island at a time where there is a permanent replacement for missing teeth-the amazing dental implant.
A dental implant, or tooth implant, is anchored into the jaw bone. It does not slide around like removable dentures. It functions just like a natural tooth.
With a dental implant, you can talk, chew, and brush like normal. Eat that steak. Laugh out loud. Sing at the top of your lungs!
The dental implant procedure available in Staten Island is not an experimental treatment. Dental implants have been available for many years. You can be sure that the dental implant procedure has been fully tested and tweaked to perfection. The success rate for dental implants in Staten Island is almost one hundred percent.
If you have a missing tooth and want to get a tooth implant, it is important to choose an experienced Staten Island cosmetic dental specialist to perform your implant procedure. To schedule a dental implant or cosmetic dentistry consultation, call (347) 695-4370.
A Staten Island dental implant is a strong and beautiful tooth replacement that, incidentally, costs much less than a diamond of similar size. (See the quote at the beginning of this article.) To discuss financing options, contact our office.
At Staten Island Dental Care, we offer the full spectrum of restorative, cosmetic, and general dentistry services. If you need a gentle family dentist to put your kids at ease or a precision smile design artist, we invite you to meet Dr. Frederick Hecht, DMD.

New Protein For Staten Island Dental Implant Patients
Hundreds of Staten Island dental implant recipients have replaced missing teeth with jaw-bone anchored tooth implants. Unlike a dental bridge, a tooth implant consists of a titanium post inserted into the jaw bone. The bone meshes with the post to create a strong base for the natural-looking prosthetic tooth and crown that attaches to the post.
Dental implants are usually the ideal restoration for Staten Island people who want to replace a missing tooth. There is a problem, however, if the jaw bone is too thin at the implant site.
When a tooth is extracted, the bone loses the blood circulation at the former site of the root. Consequently, bone recession often occurs. If the recession is extensive, there is not enough bone to hold the dental implant post.
Bone grafting can augment the bone at the implant site and provide the bone density necessary for a successful implant. This is usually effective, but it does require time for the new bone to generate. A new discovery may provide a quicker solution for regenerating bone.
Researchers at the Georgia Health Sciences University College of Dental Medicine have identified a protein that quickly stimulates the production of new bone. The research team, led by Dr. Ulf M.E. Wikesjo, implanted bone morphogenetic protein in test subjects and discovered that “more new bone formed within four weeks than with conventional bone grafting.”
This protein will require extensive testing before it is available for Staten Island dental implant patients. However, I am pleased at the prospect of an additional method for making dental implants possible for my Staten Island clients with missing teeth and jaw bone recession.

Dental Implants In Staten Island
The best permanent tooth replacement treatment available to Staten Island people who are missing teeth are dental implants.
A dental implant is a metal (ideally titanium) rod implanted into the bone to replace the missing root. The crown and supporting structure are securely and permanently attached to the rod. Titanium is amazingly strong and extremely well tolerated by the human body. There are very few instances of rejection. In fact, most Staten Island implant dentists are not familiar with any such cases.
Tooth implants offer a long-term solution to tooth loss. Are you a good Staten Island candidate for tooth implant surgery?
Because the metal rod is anchored into the jaw bone, it is essential that you have enough healthy bone at the implant site. Cosmetic dentist, Frederick Hecht can determine if you do.
Age is rarely a factor. Dental implants have proved to be successful for Staten Island people of all ages. Dr. Frederick Hecht provides comprehensive dental care for every member of the family.
There are a few medical issues that may affect your eligibility for implants. These include diabetes, osteoporosis, radiation therapy for cancer, parathyroid disorders, bone disorders and leukemia. The presence of one or more of these conditions does not necessarily mean an implant cannot work for you; discuss any health issues with Dr. Frederick Hecht during your implant dentistry consultation.
Staten Island Dental Care is located at 1520 Richmond Avenue in Staten Island. Call (347) 695-4370 to schedule an implant consultation.
What Does A Missing Tooth Say About You?
When you meet someone in Staten Island who is missing a front tooth, what does that say to you? Do you wonder if they were in an accident? Do you automatically start making assumptions about their income, level of education and overall physical health?
Though it is extremely unfair, we are often judged (and misjudged) by our appearance. Even if a person is impeccably dressed and groomed, a missing front tooth detracts from the overall pleasing impression.
Here is a personal story from a woman who lost a tooth:
I lost my job and along with it my dental insurance, then a month later, one of my front teeth. It has been very hard to find work…. and I know the missing tooth has cost me several jobs.”
A missing tooth can be a big deal.
Dental implants not only restore oral health, they restore self-confidence. Dental implants are a permanent solution for missing teeth. Studies have shown that after more than 20 years, the vast majority of dental implants placed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons continue to function at peak performance. If properly cared for, dental implants can last a lifetime.
Dental implants are one of the procedures we routinely perform at Staten Island Dental Care to help our Staten Island clients regain the beautiful smile they once had. Not all cosmetic dental procedures are as extreme as teeth implants. There are many minimally-invasive remedies for unattractive smiles.
Porcelain veneers instantly provide a perfect, gleaming tooth surface for Staten Island clients with broken or discolored teeth. Tooth whitening is a quick and affordable dentistry procedure in Staten Island that achieves dramatic results without requiring the removal of any tooth structure. Call Staten Island Dental Care at (347) 695-4370 for more information about smile design and restorative dentistry.

Dental Implants for Staten Island
Q: When is the least expensive tooth replacement method really the most expensive?
A: When it ends up costing far more in the long run.
Many Staten Island implant dentistry clients who lose a tooth do not understand the importance of replacing it with a dental implant. They wrongly believe that one missing tooth is not a significant problem. In fact, some people who have an abscessed tooth extracted are so glad the pain is gone that they forget that the extraction is not the solution. When a tooth is lost, the risk of losing the adjacent teeth increases dramatically.
Dr. David Scharf, a Board Certified Periodontist and Dental Implant Surgeon and a Clinical Assistant Professor at New York University College of Dentistry says:
“Many times consumers will choose to replace a missing tooth with a removable partial denture because it is the least expensive option. In the long run however, removable partial dentures may be more costly due the loss of adjacent teeth and the need for future replacements. Many people opt to replace teeth with dental implants because they do not compromise the survival of the adjacent teeth.”
Dr. Scharf notes…
“With the price of gasoline and food soaring people try to cut back wherever they can. Unfortunately choosing the least expensive options for tooth replacement can have some very costly ramifications down the road.”
If you are missing a tooth, you may still be able to save the adjacent teeth if receive a dental implant soon. A dental implant bonds chemically with the jaw bone and helps maintain its stability.

Live Better With Dental Implants in Staten Island
Ill-fitting dentures cause more problems for denture wearers in than they solve. If you live with loose dentures, you probably regard them as a necessary evil. Though they certainly look better than a toothless mouth, in practical terms they leave much to be desired because they affect two essential activities: eating and talking.
Unfortunately, many frustrated denture wearers have quit dining in restaurants or engaging in social activities because they are afraid their dentures will slip. If this is the case, it is time to see your dentist.
Dental Implants at Staten Island Dental Care in Staten Island are allowing former denture patients to re-engage in life.
Consider the advantages of implant anchored dentures:
- They are stable because the implant is anchored in the bone.
- Your denture is fixed, it will not move around in your mouth.
- They prevent bone loss that typically occurs when teeth are removed.
- They eliminate the necessity of regular denture relines.
- They do not irritate gums.
- No denture adhesive is required.
Our dental implant bone clients who have replaced their traditional dentures with implant overdentures enthusiastically say that the dental implant cost was more than worth it.
Do you want to eat normally again? What is the value of maintaining your facial shape? Can you put a price on confidence?

Hate Your Dentures?
Perhaps you have heard or seen the Staten Island dental industry’s advertising about dental implants. Most Staten Island dentists claim that dental implant dentures can change your life. Does this sound like hype? Exaggeration?
Let’s look at the facts about dental implant anchored dentures in Staten Island:
Chewing: An oral implant denture can restore up to 95 percent of normal chewing function. How important is chewing? Can you chew easily with your current full or partial denture? Can you bite apples? When was the last time you ate a raw carrot?
Fit: Implant anchored dentures stay in place. An implant denture doesn’t slide around in your mouth and cause sores. Manhattan implant denture wearers who exercise regularly especially appreciate this benefit.
Appearance: How does your smile look? Can you smile confidently? How many Bayonne denture wearers love their smile? Implant anchored dentures look like natural teeth. They don’t move when you smile, eat, talk, bike, swim, dance, golf, ski; you get the idea.
Bone health: When teeth are extracted, bone recession can occur over time (in fact, this happens in almost every case). Because a titanium implant is an artificial ‘tooth root’ inserted into your jaw bone, your bone has a better chance of staying healthy. If there are no other adverse conditions present, your jaw bone should remain strong and dense, just as if the original tooth root were there.
If you hate your dentures and live in Manhattan or Bayonne, why don’t you come in for a consultation about dental implants and mini-implants? We can discuss all the particulars including procedure specifics, healing time and dental implant cost. Then you can decide for yourself if Implant dentures will, as promised, change your life.

Staten Island Tooth Restoration: Dental Implants and Dental Bridges
When my Staten Island clients ask me about tooth restoration, I usually tell
them about fixed (or ‘traditional’) dental bridges or tooth implants. A dental bridge is an artificial tooth which replaces a missing tooth. The false tooth (called a ‘pontic’) is fused to porcelain crowns on either side of the missing tooth.
Tooth replacement has been a highly requested procedure at my Staten Island dental practice. Patients have expressed concern about tooth replacement for many years. Most of my questions have to do with the strength of the tooth replacement, and durability.
Dental implants are also popular concern for my tooth replacement patients. A dental implant consists of a titanium post surgically inserted into the jaw bone to replace the root of the missing tooth. The post integrates with the bone to provide a stable foundation for the replacement tooth.
After it has bonded with the bone (it usually takes three to six months), a smaller post is attached. This post extends above the gum line. The artificial tooth (crown) is then attached. The entire process takes several months, but consistently yields terrific results for tooth restoration patients. My New York cosmetic dentistry patients appreciate the fact that I stay up to date on the latest advancements in tooth replacement procedures.
Both smile restoration options preserve or restore facial contour and allow you to talk and eat normally. Tooth replacements prevent adjoining teeth from gradually shifting and can help correct bite problems, too. Tooth implants and dental bridges can replace one or more missing teeth. Many dental patients have been treated successfully with these tooth restoration alternatives.
Call Staten Island Dental Care and ask for Dr. Fred Hecht, DMD to schedule an evaluation for New York tooth restoration. You can schedule your tooth restoration by calling us at (718) 761-5757.

A beautiful smile is an important component of your overall appearance. Unattractive teeth draw the eye away from other pleasing features such as thick shiny hair, gorgeous eyes or a peaches and cream complexion.
Fortunately, there are several cosmetic dental procedures to restore or repair one or more teeth. At Staten Island Dental Care, we can complete most of them in one short visit. Think about it; you could achieve a stunning smile in less than an afternoon!
