Cosmetic Dentistry vs. General Dentistry In Staten Island
Hello, I’m Dr. Frederick Hecht. Welcome to my Staten Island cosmetic dentistry blog. Today’s article focuses on the difference between general dentistry and cosmetic dentistry.
General dentists in Staten Island are dedicated to preventing and treating oral disease such as cavities and gum disease. When a problem is diagnosed, let’s say, a cavity between two teeth, a general dentist will assess the best way to restore the tooth involved.
Staten Island cosmetic dentists perform elective dental procedures that make a smile more attractive. Cosmetic dentistry procedures available at Staten Island Dental Care include teeth whitening, tooth-colored fillings, dental implants, veneers, inlays, onlays, and dental crowns.
Some Staten Island dentists, like myself, offer both general and cosmetic dentistry procedures. In some cases, there is a cosmetic component to restorative procedures. For example, if a Staten Island dental patient comes in after receiving an injury that chipped a front tooth, the tooth needs to be restored to prevent decay. The tooth is also less structurally sound, so it is vulnerable to further damage. In addition, the tooth affects the overall appearance of the smile. Depending on the specifics of the damage, there are several of restorative dentistry options. Dental bonding, porcelain veneers, and crowns are all used to repair a damaged tooth.
As you can see, there is not always a definitive line between general and cosmetic dentistry. At Staten Island Dental Care, my comfortable team provides the full spectrum of preventative, restorative, and cosmetic dental procedures. We treat Staten Island area patients of all ages: from toddlers just beginning to get their baby teeth to mature clients who remember the days when many people were afraid of dentists and their whiny drills. (Some of our wonderful elderly Staten Island patients have crowns that are twice as old as our hygienists.)
Experienced Staten Island dental professionals who perform family, general, and cosmetic dental procedures can meet all of your families’ dental needs.

Smile Perfection in Staten Island
The most difficult part of attaining perfection is finding something to do for an encore. -Author Unknown
We are perfectionists at Staten Island Dental Care where we create perfect smiles for our Staten Island cosmetic dental and smile makeover patients.
Here are some of the cosmetic dental procedures we use in smile makeovers at Staten Island Dental Care.
Implant Dentistry
Dental implants are the ultimate tooth restoration available in Staten Island, or anywhere else, for that matter. A tooth implant consists of a metal post that is inserted into your jawbone. The post replaces the root of the missing tooth.
After a few months, it meshes with your jawbone to provide the strength and integrity of a natural tooth. A base and natural-looking crown is permanently attached to the post. For most Staten Island patients with missing teeth, it is the preferred restoration. Implants can also be used to attach dentures and partial dentures for no-slip implant/denture combos.
Crowns
A mainstay of Staten Island cosmetic dentistry, dental crowns are more beautiful than ever. New fabrication technologies and materials have improved the aesthetics and strength of this restorative option.
Veneers
A porcelain veneer is a more conservative treatment than a full crown. This is a good choice for Staten Island patients whose teeth are structurally sound but have unsightly flaws such as discoloration, chips, cracks, or imperfect shape. Are you one of the many Staten Island teens or adults with dark tetracycline stains? Call us today at (347) 695-4370 to say goodbye to tetracycline stains!
Inlays/Onlays
Inlays and onlays (indirect fillings) are designed and fabricated using dental CAD/CAM software. These fillings are strong, attractive, and precisely fitted to the cavity.
Tooth Whitening
Teeth bleaching is the crowning touch for a perfect smile. (It’s the only thing you need if you are a fortunate Staten Island man or woman with perfectly-shaped and aligned teeth.) No one has to live with dull or stained teeth. Call us today for a teeth whitening consultation at our Staten Island office.

Comfortable Care For the High Fear Patient
Is Malocclusion Causing Your Headache?
Are you a Staten Island adult who suffers with chronic headaches? Have you tried Imitrex, diet adjustments, and chiropractic treatment? Perhaps the cause is not stress-induced tension, spine alignment or eyestrain. Maybe the culprit is right under your nose.
Bite misalignment or malocclusion is a common Staten Island problem that often goes undetected. Nature intended the front teeth to fit slightly forward from the lower teeth. With a perfect bite, the molars fit together like precision gears.
Malocclusion can cause headaches, tooth loosening, tooth fracture, and in extreme cases, difficulty chewing, speaking or breathing.
Staten Island braces are an effective solution for most bite problems. Braces not only move teeth, they can also correct the position and function of the joints, muscles and bones in the jaw. In cases of extreme malocclusion, jaw surgery in Staten Island may be necessary.
Not all Staten Island family dentists treat bite problems. At Staten Island Dental Care we treat all types of malocclusion including overbite, underbite and crossbite. For an affordable Staten Island cosmetic dentistry consultation, call us at (347) 695-4370.
Staten Island Dental Care offers technologically-advanced dentistry in a friendly environment. We offer smile whitening, dental veneers, tooth-colored fillings and dental implants. To learn more about our dental philosophy and available procedures, see http://www.afraidofthedentist.com/about-us/.

What is a Canted Midline?
Dr. Frederick Hecht considers many factors when designing a smile for a Staten Island smile makeover client. One of the smile design elements involved is the facial midline. The facial midline can be determined by drawing an imaginary line from the center of the eyebrows to the center of the two peaks in the top lip (Cupid’s bow).
The skilled Staten Island cosmetic dentist considers the length and angle of the facial midline to properly position porcelain crowns, veneers and dental implants. When front teeth restorations do not line up with the facial midline, it is called a canted midline. This is a common mistake found in the cosmetic work of inexperienced Staten Island cosmetic dentists.
Most Staten Island dentistry patients do not realize the level of 3-D engineering required in cosmetic dentistry. In addition to the orientation in relation to the facial midline, there is also the angle and size of the teeth in relation to each other and in relation to the size and shape of the lips and gums.
If you are considering an extensive smile makeover, you do not want to trust your smile to an inexperienced Staten Island cosmetic dentist. When you have a smile design consultation with Dr. Frederick Hecht feel free to ask probing questions about Dr. Hecht’s experience and technical design procedures. We are confident that you will feel comfortable choosing Dr. Hecht for your smile makeover.

Dental Implants In Staten Island
The best permanent tooth replacement treatment available to Staten Island people who are missing teeth are dental implants.
A dental implant is a metal (ideally titanium) rod implanted into the bone to replace the missing root. The crown and supporting structure are securely and permanently attached to the rod. Titanium is amazingly strong and extremely well tolerated by the human body. There are very few instances of rejection. In fact, most Staten Island implant dentists are not familiar with any such cases.
Tooth implants offer a long-term solution to tooth loss. Are you a good Staten Island candidate for tooth implant surgery?
Because the metal rod is anchored into the jaw bone, it is essential that you have enough healthy bone at the implant site. Cosmetic dentist, Frederick Hecht can determine if you do.
Age is rarely a factor. Dental implants have proved to be successful for Staten Island people of all ages. Dr. Frederick Hecht provides comprehensive dental care for every member of the family.
There are a few medical issues that may affect your eligibility for implants. These include diabetes, osteoporosis, radiation therapy for cancer, parathyroid disorders, bone disorders and leukemia. The presence of one or more of these conditions does not necessarily mean an implant cannot work for you; discuss any health issues with Dr. Frederick Hecht during your implant dentistry consultation.

Common Myths about Staten Island Cosmetic Dentistry
Myth #1: Cosmetic Dentistry is Never Necessary for a Healthy Smile
Many so-called Staten Island cosmetic dental procedures are not solely cosmetic. Staten Island dental procedures such as tooth replacement are smile-enhancing and, more importantly, prevent many potential problems such as tooth movement, bone loss and difficulty chewing and speaking.
Myth #2: A Staten Island Dental Bridge is the Only Way to Replace a Missing Tooth
Dental bridges are an Staten Island dental cosmetic procedure that have been used for many years with success. However, dental implants are often a better choice for replacing one or more missing teeth. Dental implants have many advantages for Statnen Island dental patients. They feel like natural teeth, they are stronger, and they are easier to clean than dental bridges. Staten Island tooth implants can also be used to anchor dentures or partial dentures.
Myth #3: At-Home Kits are as Effective for Staten Island Tooth Whitening Than a Professional Dental Solution
At Staten Island Dental Care, we offer our Staten Island dental patients teeth whitening treatments that provide a much greater level of whiteness than at-home kits. At-home kits may remove surface stains, but they do not provide optimum results and can often lead to uneven coloring.
Myth #4: Dental Bonding is the Best Way to Fix a Chipped Tooth.
Dental bonding can restore the shape of a tooth, but may not be the best long-term solution. If you have a damaged tooth, you may be a good candidate for porcelain veneers. Call us at (347) 695-4370 to set up an appointment so we can determine the best solution for you.
Myth #5: Staten Island Braces are the Only Way to Straighten Teeth
Braces are often part of a transforming dental makeover for our Staten Island teens and adults alike. However, if your teeth are only slightly crooked, lumineers can reshape your teeth and dramatically improve your smile. And the best thing about veneers? They offer instant results!

Full Mouth Reconstruction in Staten Island
Staten Island dental techniques and materials have advanced to a point where total and near-total mouth reconstruction is possible right here in the Staten Island area.
Unlike conventional removable dentures, extensive mouth reconstruction involves strong, functional and aesthetically pleasing teeth with roots permanently anchored into the jaw bone.
You have probably heard around Staten Island about dental implants; the tooth replacement option that is, in most cases, the best possible replacement for a missing tooth. Dental implants have been used in Brooklyn and Manhattan for many years to replace one or two missing teeth. However, they can also provide a structure for dental crowns, bridges, and anchored dentures that replace nearly every tooth in the mouth!
Every Staten Island smile makeover patient requires a somewhat unique combination of cosmetic dental procedures, but let’s talk about a hypothetical case involving several restorations:
‘Linda’ was a 52 year-old Staten Island patient with a mouthful of problems. She was missing most of her back teeth on both her upper and lower arch. Four of her front teeth were chipped and her gums had eroded revealing the metal bases of two old crowns.
To restore a beautiful, strong and youthful-looking smile, she would receive dental implants to anchor partial dentures for her upper and lower back teeth. After soft tissue grafts, her front teeth would receive a combination of porcelain crowns and veneers.
The result? A stunning smile, renewed confidence and no more slipping dentures!
