Cleaning your teeth in New York is the simple task of removing plaque (a sticky deposit that gets left on teeth in which bacteria thrives) and tartar (a calcium deposit that forms on teeth and aids in tooth decay). This is done by brushing regularly with a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, and flossing. Brushing and flossing at least twice each day can keep plaque and tartar from building up on your teeth and results in cleaner, healthier teeth. A regular visit to your local Staten Island dental hygienist will help you stay on top of problems that can go unseen.
The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends visiting your local Staten Island, New York dentist at least once every 6 months for a regular dental check up and teeth cleaning. These regular visits to your Staten Island dentist potentially prevent the undetected development of problems that can occur from neglecting to clean your teeth.
To keep that beautiful Staten Island, New York smile in good shape, come in for a dental check up and teeth cleaning.

Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are a thin coat of clear resin that is applied to the biting surfaces of teeth, usually the rear molars. The back teeth are more prone to cavities because is difficult to reach them with a tooth brush and the surfaces contain pits and grooves that easily trap bacteria. It is hard for many adults to clean their back molars and almost impossible for our young Staten Island children.
Dental sealants fill in the pits and grooves on the rear molars to create a smooth surface. Staten Island family dentists most often recommend sealants for children’s permanent back teeth, though sometimes they are used for adults, too.
Staten Island parents may not realize how quickly a cavity can form in a young child’s mouth. Many Staten Island area kids that we see develop cavities even before they start kindergarten! It is vital that our local parents start regular dental visits early. The American Dental Association advises that a child’s initial dental exam take place soon after the first tooth erupts, but no later than the toddler’s first birthday.
Dental sealants protect teeth that have no decay (primary prevention) and also prevent further decay progression in teeth that show very early signs of disease (secondary prevention).
At Staten Island Dental Care, we take special care of our Staten Island pediatric dental clients. We want each child’s dental visits to be pleasant and painless so they will never develop a fear of the dentist. We advise parents on the specific dental issues associated with each stage of childhood. Ask us about fluoride, sports mouthguards, and orthodontic treatment.
I am Dr. Frederick Hecht of Staten Island Dental Care. I don’t believe that childhood cavities are unavoidable. Call my office at (347) 695-4370 to schedule a Staten Island pediatric dental exam. We offer dental sedation for anxious or nervous patients.
I provide comprehensive restorative and cosmetic dentistry for Staten Island people of all ages. My office is located at 1520 Richmond Avenue in Staten Island. You can learn more about my practice at http://www.afraidofthedentist.com/about-us/.

Give Me Some Air
How long have dentists been drilling teeth? Would you believe 9,000 years? In an ancient graveyard in Pakistan, archaeologists unearthed skulls containing teeth that had undergone drilling. The stone-age dentists removed decay using drills constructed of sharpened flint.
Though advanced dentistry would not be possible without drilling, the sound of a dental drill can make many Staten Island patient’s hearts pound. However, there is another way your Manhattan cosmetic dentist can remove decay. This technique is known as air abrasion or drill-less dentistry. An air abrasion instrument removes material by spraying tiny aluminum oxide particles onto the tooth. The particles work like a sandblaster spraying away the affected tooth structure.
The many advantages of air abrasion make it a popular procedure for Bayonne family dentists. Because air abrasion is usually pain free, the need for anesthesia is reduced. The air abrasion instrument does not create vibrations or pressure. Willowbrook cosmetic dentistry patients appreciate the fact that air abrasion instruments don’t produce that whiny drill sound that rings in your ears and makes your palms sweat. Because of this, air abrasion can be a less-frightening option for young Brooklyn dentistry patients. Air abrasion is often quicker and more precise than traditional drilling, leaving more of the healthy tooth intact.
aAt Staten Island Dental Care, we provide anxiety-free dentistry. If you would like to learn more about air abrasion, dentistry sedation or tooth implant cost, call us at (718) 761-5757. We are located at 1520 Richmond Avenue in Staten Island. The comfortable staff at Staten Island Dental Care is dedicated to your comfort and satisfaction.

Staten Island Dentists And Your Mouth Sores
As your local Staten Island dentist, one of my roles is to help you take care of your mouth. Sometimes mouth sores can be an issue, and while dentists often defer to an oral surgeon for extreme cases, we can help you make an assessment.
If you live in the Staten Island area and have a mouth sore that lasts more than a week or two; come and see me. Mouth sores can be an indicator of disease, and an early assessment is the best bet. A better understanding of your mouth sores can lead quickly to comfort and a resolution. If necessary, treatment and pain relief can be offered.
There are two types of mouth sores that are common; canker sores and cold sores.
Canker sores are small ulcer-like sores with a white or gray base and a red border. They are found on the inside of the mouth and while they are not contagious, they can be painful. Typically a canker sore heals in a week or two. Antimicrobal mouth-rinses, over-the-counter topical anesthetics, and avoiding spicy and acidic foods may offer you temporary relief while your sore is healing.
The cause of a canker sores is not certain. Possible explanations range from a cut on the inside the mouth, and reactions to extreme temperatures or acids from food or drink, to fatigue, stress, and allergies. Some studies point to bacteria or viruses, or combinations of all these factors.
Cold sores, also called fever blisters or Herpes Simplex, are groups of fluid-filled blisters that often appear around the lips, sometimes appearing under the nose or around the chin. Cold sores are contagious and painful, but usually heal in about a week. Some over-the-counter anesthetics may provide relief. There are some antiviral drugs on the market that have shown promise in reducing outbreaks, but there is currently no known cure. The initial infection, known as primary herpes, often occurs before adulthood. Once the virus infects you, it may stay in your body and remain inactive or cause occasional cold sore outbreaks. Outbreaks may be triggered by a fever, sunburn, skin abrasions, stress, or exposure to extremes in temperature.
As your Staten Island dentist, I can’t do much to stop canker sores or cold sores in your mouth. I can discuss the health of your mouth, and examine any causes that make your mouth sore. In some cases a change in the way you care for your mouth can reduce the chances of getting mouth sores. If you are in the Staten Island area, and would like to speak with a dental professional about mouth sores, area give us a call at Fred Hecht DMD.
Our number is (718) 761-5757.
